I need some good pads with spacey, atmospheric sounds for a dark, sci-fi student film project.
Any decent freebies out there? Or relatively cheap options?
I am brand-new here, so forgive if this has been covered (I did search the database but didn't really come up with anything). Something along the lines of "Dronar Hybrid Module by Gothic Instruments", but I don't own Kontakt (and can't afford currently). I like the idea of a virtual instrument over the plethora of sample libraries out there, so that I can morph and manipulate the sounds and do some sound design/experimentation.
I just don't know where to begin...

You don't necessary need Kontakt if sound library was made for Kontakt because you can use samples in free samplers and create your own sound library out of it, for example, sfz library, or simply reuse samples as one shots in sampler, of course if sound library is consisted of .wav files and not .ncw files.
Let's call it a scavenging of resources.
You can find decent amount of samples at 99 Sounds:
http://99sounds.org/

Second thing, it would be much more easier if you said what DAW you are using because some DAW's have
xy-VSTi that already has xy-bank or presets to get you started, etc., or there are tutorials and stuff...

Third, when it comes to presets, commercial stuff, The Unfinished first comes to my mind when it comes to cinematic presets, mostly for U-he Zebra:

There's always the great line of (now) free synths by H.G. Fortune.
32-bit Windows only, though...

Just yesterday I decided to buy jbridge just for that case, how happy I am to again have the possibility to use all this great H.G. Fortune synths again :D in my 64 bit environment.

And what I would like to mention es the great Algomusic stuff which is 32-bit too and now offered for free (search in the forum, just dont remember name). All the great TC presets in it for example.

Really wonder that there seems to be nothing comparable (and affordabel I have to add) ported to or develloped for 64 bit. Maybe cause of all the kontakt stuff. But with some of these loaded I often came to the end of my system capacities very soon.

EDIT: heres the link to the algomusic stuff, now offered generously by westgatesounds:

For me, it is NI Razor and/or NI Absynth. Razor is easier to program but heavier on the cpu. Absynth is very powerful but it needs time to learn. Anyway, I always consider Absynth the most exotic synth! It also has great presets for atmosphere and alien places!

NI Prism also can make nice pads.

I can't recommend you anything free, or even relatively cheap, but, if you have the budget, i'd get a decent wavetable synth, and a good reverb for that sound. I can recommend Blachole as a reverb, will immediately give you that spacey sound, and it's easy to modulate too. You can get that one for around 60-70 $ here in the marketplace. For a wavetable synth, i can recommend Waldorf Largo, all the Waldorf synths have a spacey sound, warm, cold, whatever you want, and a wavetable synth also makes it easy to get movement in the sound, and bring you a broad palette of sounds. I've seen Largo go here in the marketplace for about $85.

Or you can go the free route, and get the HG Fortune synths. Not a big fan of those personally though TBH, the results are a bit random, and that's not what i would like for my music... each to his like of course. I can't think of a really great free reverb either.

Check out Marazmator, it's free and cool

You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

For free, you can't beat HG Fortune synths for atmospheric stuff. As others have said, 32 bit only.

In the non free route, I'd also go with ABsynth. It is a bit pricey at $149 but has a ton of presets that will absolutely fit what you're looking for.

I second the recommendation for Algomusic stuff. Tim Conrardy (RIP) had a passion for space, and the majority of his sounds were space inspired.

Free wavetable synth: U-he Zebralette, excellent for pads. Get some classic wavetables from the U-he library. Comes with a good manual.

Two of the best free verbs: Abstract Chamber http://www.signaldust.com/p-abstractchamber.html a really smooth, darkish hall, and OrilRiver, a more versatile low CPU verb https://www.kvraudio.com/product/orilri ... is-tihanov.

You might consider HGSounds various Kontakt instruments. They are now part of an amazing group buy:

Edit: ah, I see you don't use Kontakt. My apologies!
