I think that "virus" is a catch-all term for any unwanted software that installs itself without the user's permission. Bit like Windows 10...

Yeah, I forgot that one.

It seems that when regular users have become smart enough to not click on attachments in mysterious E-mails, they still happily go along with anybody calling them.

I had one of those calls earlier this month, a person speaking in broken english claming to be from Microsoft, I was intrigued but chose to hang up
