Hey Dudes!

So been looking for a realistic Orchestra, strings, brass etc. Well I found East/West and I really like it but that PRICE geez are they having a laught?!

Also want a realistic bass guitar! Gotcha with two questions :)

Post

Compare the price of EastWest to hiring a real orchestra and it'll be quite a bargain

If you think EWQL is expensive, forget looking for a realistic sounding orchestra because you're not going to find a really good one for less.

Just recently completed a Broadway type soundtrack CD. These were all done exclusively using EWQL libraries.

The whole soundtrack, minus the overture, is on my Vocaloid playlist.

It's the first 16 tracks

Got an ipad? - 'Old' video; the app's been cleaned up/features-added & updated to work with the current ios build (9.3.5) - I got this plus all the iap; it sounds pretty good, and although it ain't cheap, it doesn't cost a heap of $$$:

EWQL is really awesome, but they also have a Composer Cloud deal which is really worth it. Here is a track completely done with Composer Cloud ($29 a month)-

Edit- and the cloud includes some REALLY nice basses!

Pardon me, I'm still not quite clear on this, all the Cloud-libraries stop working after the period, right?

Anyway, if you could settle with a less-realistic, more budget-light option, Garritan Instant Orchestra might be more suitable for entry-level and I hear it's quite good for very broad strokes, hence the name. It's still on sale, -30%. Personal Orchestra 5 might also do just fine. I've read pretty good things about the update.

In addition, check out my thread. It lists all the available multi-sampled orchestras. viewtopic.php?f=42&t=443073

For what it's worth, SampleTekk will be starting their 50% off sale on September 1st. I recently picked up the BOB Brass that includes French horn, trombone, trumpet, and tuba. Beautifully sampled, tons of layers and articulations, and at the sale price, only 50 bucks.

Not an entire orchestra, but would give you an affordable brass section to start building your own.

Geesh... For this sound, you could use Sonatina Orchestra on the PC. It's free.

Everything by Samplemodeling.

I think EWQL is one of the more comprehensive collections out there. There are bigger ones with more articulations, but they cost a lot more, too. And as you can hear from @wagtunes and @thejonsolo showed, the EWQL libraries sound very good and are quite expressive.

That said, you may not find everything you want in any one library, and many composers will blend instruments from different libraries to get the sound they want.

I used a relatively small (by today's standards) library from IKMM's original Miroslav Phiharmonik for this piece, but I used the concert grand piano, and blended some strings and horns from EWQL for this piece: https://soundcloud.com/shadowsoflife/sunrise

I haven't checked out IKMM's updated version of Miroslav Philharmonik, but I don't think it's terribly expensive. Garritan is another good choice, too. Or, you can make your own library from the instruments used in the UK's Philharmonia orchestra: http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/explore/make_music. (Even if you don't make an entire library, some of these could sound good when blended with whatever orchestra library you get.)

Here's some of my stuff: https://soundcloud.com/shadowsoflife. If you hear something you like, I'm looking for collaborators.

I'm back with some better info!

Yes, definitely try the free Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra first. It's actually quite good if you learn how to use it. This was my first completed composition using it: https://soundcloud.com/nine-of-kings/soundtrack-track

Secondly, EastWest is having a 50% off sale for Labor Day, so this could be your chance :D

One option might be the Versilian Community Orchestra – there is a basic 2GB free version for .sfz and EXS24 (plus bigcat1969, one of the posters here has done a Kontakt conversion). There are larger versions for money (up to $230 or so for the full 19GB library).

I haven't tried it. Apparently legato isn't great, but that's where the more expensive libraries tend to score because decent legato tends to chew up a lot of samples for the crossfades.

Good is expensive. The EW Hollywood series is relatively cheap in comparison to competitors such as Spitfire and Orchestral Tools or CineSamples. I think you can buy the whole Gold bundle for under $500. For that price, you can't even by the strings of the others.

Edit: you can buy Hollywood Gold for $332.50. That's crazy.

If you're a starter, Kirk Douglas might be something for you. It's really cheap, but not that great. http://vstbuzz.com/deals/78-off-diamond ... orchestra/
