davemcisaac wrote:Bjulin, here is my 2nd round entry. I wanted to keep my original direction and at the same time address the concerns stated in your critique. I went for a more balanced mix (thicker), took the emphasis off the Bass in the early passages, restored the fullness of the Piano, and made the Effect @ 47 seconds less distractive. I believe I came up with a pretty good compromise. I hope you enjoy it

My 2nd Round Submission. Made the overall track slightly louder. Dialed the bass down a little. Also tried to bring the main theme out more. I think the track feels a little more open and has a cleaner sound now. I am very pleased with the results and am looking forward to comments. I am happy I was able to participate in this challenge. Thanks to Bjulin, CompyFox, and all of the other participants

here is my 2nd round mix:

I left the basic mix as is, except for tiny volume changes and a little more automation. As suggested I tried to continue with cleaning the mix up, which led to some subtle EQ changes.
All in all the changes are pretty small.

We're now having the 29tn June, almost about 5pm - the second Mix Round has officially ended.

Please recheck your links if everything is all right. Then please watch this spot for the winner's podium announcement. Good luck. :tu:

Also worth to note:
  • MC23 will start on Friday
  • we're looking for a Metal Track for "Metal November"
  • if you happen to know somebody in your friends list that would love to provide us a Drum and Bass track (TechStep, Complextro, Liquid DnB, doesn't matter), please forward them to us

First of all, sorry for being a bit late.
Last days were a bit stressful, so I coudn´t make it earlier.

Sadly, VasDim didn´t come back for round 2... only 4 entries left for round 2.
At first, I have listened to your progress. I have compared your first mix with the second one.
After that, I have compared all mixes of round 2 for judging the overall quality.
The results depend on the average of these criterias.

Reviews:

Kolyev

Really really nice. I can´t even seem to hear the changes you made.
It´s good, that the clicks at the beginning are not as audible as in the first version.

Slick3gz

Nice to hear, that you took care of my wishes. Though, you overdid it a bit.
Your overall mix really is good. Everything sound clean and stuff...
The subbasses are where they should be. The highs are a bit too much, but that´s mainly because the noisy pad is too loud.
Also, you have cut out a bit too much of the low-mids. I think, that´s why it sounds a bit thin now.

Suggestion (If there was round 3):
Lower the volume of the high pad a bit and bring back some of the low freqs.
If I interpret your work right, I guess you concentrate a bit too much on only one element.
When you mix a track, try to imagine the whole room and conentrate on the overall ambience.

Dave McIsaac

Yup, the overall balance now is much better!! Gorgeous, how the elements now got their characters back.
As you said, you´ve found a nice compromise - well done!
I like how you came around with that epicness of the drums without destroying the emotional parts... this really stands out!

3ee

Immediately, I feel it is a bit louder, a bit more to the front - gorgeous - That gentle touch!
Very movie like mix... loudness, dynamic range, dark... great work!

Let´s sum this up - Characteristics:

Pro:
3ee: Nice cinematic feel
Dave: Epic feel, still emotional
Slick3gz: Soft and gentle
Kolyev: Gorgeous balance

Contra (depending on my personal preferences):
3ee: A bit too dull
Dave: A bit too loud
Slick3gz: Wouldn´t call it finished
Kolyev: Crackles not cleaned up (essential for a mixing engineer)

As you can see, all mixes have their own character - and it´s really hard to choose a winner.
I have to go for my personal preferences, so here we go:

1. Kolyev
2. Dave
3. 3ee

4. Slick3gz

Just send a pm with the soundset of your choice, your name and email adress.
Just to be clear:
You offered 3 sound sets of choice for the first place, 2 sets for the second place, and one for the third place as bonus content for this challenge?

On top of that, you're now offering one "InspireMe" sound set for each of the 12 participants incl. me as host - free of charge?

And finally - our regular "first come, first serve" license win deal to the winners podium.

Basically:
The winners of this challenge can pick one license from our pool, and xyz amount of sound sets from you.

I'd say that is a great "Start into the Summer" deal. :tu:

Thanks Bjulin, very generous! :)

Also congrats Kolyev and Dave, good job! :tu: See you in the next one.. B)

Congrats to the winners ;)

Usually I try to not listen to much to competitors' mixes before round 1, to avoid "copying" and to try to develop my own mixing style, but sometimes I do, a few days before... And this time I listened to a few mixes and indeed when I heard Kolyev's one I though "oh very clean yet rich" :) and then I adjusted a few stuff into my mix to compensate some stuff I overdid ^^

So congrats Kolyev ;)

And of course to Dave McIsaac and 3ee ^^

Thanks to Bjulin for the surprise gift too !

Post

Great news! Congrats to Dave McIsaac and 3ee for your top positions!
Bjulin wrote: Really really nice. I can´t even seem to hear the changes you made.
They were pretty subtle. Main changes were: 2 db EQ cut for the percs around 3kHz, brought a bit from the lower mids of the cello back in (to make it more audible, I cut a bit too much in the first round) and lowered the volume of the 2nd piano by 2dB or so.

I'll pick Acon Digitals Defilter plugin.

Regarding the soundsets I'll pick the Caractère, Twins and Retro Hive sets. Really interested to try these, the demos sound very nice. Too bad I don't have Diva.
Also very generous of you giving these away for free :tu:

Post

You can still pick one from "Inspire Me" (like all participants).

Else... up next is Dave McIsaac. :tu:

I´m sorry, I´m a bit late with sending out your prizes.
There was a wedding of a friend of mine on saturday - I was the music guy, so I was a bit exhausted and needed a day off.

But there you go... I´m just sending out your download codes.

Cheers!
