I have a Rode NT1 and Rode NT1000, how should I place them when recording a small group of electric instruments played by two or three people at generally quiet dynamics?

It depends how much separation you need between instruments. Are you making a simple stereo recording or building tracks in a DAW? More details would help.

It would be a stereo recording of live experimental improv.
Thanks

If you make a simple drawing of the room you are recording in and the placement (and/or a list of the instruments) of the ensemble I would be happy to help you out. I can come up with my own drawing then to show you a couple ways I would do it.

Thanks very much, what program do you use to make a drawing? I will explain instead: it is either just myself or two people sitting across from one another. I use 2-4 vintage casio and yamaha synths and an ipad/iphone apps around me, and the other person usually a banjo and synth.
