Does Fabfilter Pro-Q 2 have any weaknesses?

I'm thinking about buying a single, high-end desert island EQ and selling a bunch of my midrange stuff. Pro Q-2 comes up constantly in "best EQ" searches and all you ever read is about how great it is. Is there any area where other EQs (say Equilibrium) edge out in front?

I would say it's clean EQ, no character, which can be a weakness in some rare cases, but other than that is a pretty awesome EQ.

Clean is good by the way - just what I'm looking for. I have several EQs like Sweetone, DDMF 6144 and Waves Puigtec to get some character happening.

It's as surgical, precise, awesome, versatile as it can get (there us always DMG if you need even more of that), I use it for just about everything.

On my MacBook Pro 2013 (2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM) the demo was too CPU hungry to be usable. When opening the plugin window it always caused Logic Pro X to interrupt the playback immediately. I guess my system just couldn't handle all the nicely animated eye candy. I had the same problem with the Pro-C demo, too.

I think the FabFilter plugins have tons of amazing features and I really wanted to buy them very badly. But it just didn't work with my system.

Because of that I ditched my plans to buy Pro-Q and purchased PSP's Neon HR instead (really nice EQ, I love the frequency hunting function). And I don't regret that decision.

Only weakness I found was the price. As a hobbyist I could never justify dropping that much cash on an EQ. At current exchange rates it's $233 for me.

Never had close to an issue of CPU or GPU performance issues, my absolute go to eq for everything.

Pro-Q 2 has 'natural phase mode' which is a minimum phase mode that's somewhat close to (and IMO better than) mixed phase. (pg. 18 of the manual here: http://www.fabfilter.com/help/ffproq2-manual.pdf for more)

As for fixed slopes... are you saying I can't do this?

I think the eq-match could be great, but they made it not easy to use.
Actually very bad workflow in my opinion.

I'm fine with the Fruity Parametric or the ToneBooster EQ for simple instrument tweaking (mostly frequency cuts) - because of their simplicity, amazingly low CPU use and zero latency. So I guess I'm really talking about special duties... ie: super-high quality high/low pass for mastering, DC offset removal (steep highpass), notching problem frequencies, clean bus EQs etc.

The DDMF IIEQ Pro and LP10 have caught my eye in the lower price range - and every now and then you can get lucky with Equilibrium for a good price in the Marketplace.

I've spied Pro-Q 2 for $140-something at an online retailer... so really I'm just wondering if I should save up for that or what else I should also consider of the same high calibre. What else is there?

The Acon Digital one has caught my attention too. How does it compare to Pro-Q 2?

I've googled Fabfilter vs DMG vs Acon etc and watched a bunch of vids.

The more I learn about Pro-Q 2 the more it just seems the perfect EQ for almost everything I'll ever need. I think a decision has been made Thanks all.

Just wondering though if Pro-Q 2 has offline rendering (oversample) modes?

If I remember correctly it doesn't need any oversampling. The filters are all properly de-cramped with correct phase response up to nyquist.

.. but I may be mixing it up with DMG Equilibrium. Anyhow, should be easy to measure in VST analyzer.
