D16 Group teases PunchBOX

Okay, I don't mean to be a downer on this because it looks really cool, but it's a kick. I didn't hear any sound (the kicks) that I can't make in any synth or by using Battery 4 or any other drum library. And we're not talking about a whole drum set. We're talking about a kick.

I know there are very specialized plugins like EQs, Compressors, Reverbs, etc. But seriously, it's a kick drum. The price on this thing would have to be so ridiculously low to even consider getting it. I mean who in their right mind (just pulling a price out of thin air) would pay $99 just to make a kick drum? Even $49.

What am I missing here? What makes this so special? Or is this going to be a very low priced item (would have to be under $30 for me) that makes it a no brainer to get?

Because I am just not seeing it.

About "usefulness".
If D16 and its partners have chosen to spent some time (and money) designing this synth, there must be some reason. They probably know their customer better than you. And if it doesn't work or if nobody buys it. Don't worry it will disappear in no time. It seems that you are obviously not the target.
You need to have spent at least a few hours enjoying some music in a club on a big system to understand how much a kick is important in a lot of electronic music. If, like a lot of people, you just listen to music on the sound system of your laptop, or enjoying a style of music where the kick drum is used as a cosmetic background, that's of course something that you can not understand. And talking about options. What's the point to buy another synth when you already have one ? Maybe just to find another way to have fun making music...

About the price.
What's the point of your "questions" (in an announcement thread above all) ? In music, the price has never been related to the "usefulness" or the quality of a product. Logic and its arsenal can be bought for a couple of hundreds and you need 2 or 3 times this same amount just to buy some violin library (which are also totally useless for some people).

No offense, but I find this kind of post, in an announcement thread, totally inelegant to say the least...

When I received the announcement mail, this morning, I thought "A kick plugin ? I don't need another one, I already have almost all of them plus a couple of hardware kick drum only, that cost much more than a plugin". (Not mentioning that I know how to program a synth.)
After watching the video, I will probably buy it as soon as it is released. Just to have another flavour

What you took as negative I take as simply being perplexed why somebody would want a kick drum module. No need to get nasty. I got my answers, I understand them, and I've moved on.

It's about time someone took this concept one step further by designing a kick + bassline plugin with some cool functionality in terms of gluing them together internally, ie band specific sidechaining, dynamics processing , distortion/saturation, transient shaping, step sequencing with glides/accents and limiting over the top.

Sugar-bytes went half-way there with their Egoist groovebox, I don't know why they bailed out before it was fully realized. It's such a great start. Hopefully they're planning on a V2...

Look like it's going to be interesting. Of course to early without price point or demo to appreciate value for money, features and usiblity to judge.
I think for those who haven't yet discovered Kick2, Reaktor6 (some great drum modules in reaktor) and have Maschine2 (drum synth in Maschine is fantastic) will venture into PB. I cant help thinking it's either a one trick pony that will evolve into so much more, we will see...

It looks like a very promising plugin!
Though well made, I am not so found of the grungy design and hope there will be an option for a cleaner design.
I am also wondering if PunchBOX will have any graphic help to sculpt the sound.
I find that the wave form display together with the amp curves and the EQ curves in Sonic Academy Kick 2 are great to easily shape the sound.

This should not be surprise. Nepheton is decade old product. This one is likely more advanced and with other modules more versatile. People learn and improve. Hope that answer your question.

Vengeance Metrum is 120 usd and requres a dongle. Still people buy it and praise it everywhere.

Kick is super important in certain music genres.

I understand it's important. It's the backbone of all dance music along with the bass. But you're telling me you can't make a usable bass with your existing synths that you're also using to make this same genre based music?

of course you can make it with existing synths and effects. No one is stopping you.

That being said, the ability to make a kick (like any sound) your own can and is very important. I could go through the (unknown, too many, I really need to organize the damn thing...) kick samples that I have, and possibly not find one that suits what I want to do, so having a synth plug-in just for a kick would be nice (even though I know drum synthesis, it was one of the first things I learned).

Also, this is d16 that's making it, so at the very least, we're getting something decent, if not good. I'm very glad that d16 continues to make new products, especially non-emulations. I've been a d16 user since I started making music, as I got into the Silverline group buy years ago.

Okay, let me ask you a question. If you were interested in a plugin like this, what would you pay for it? What would make it worth it to you?

To the people being negative towards this plugin all I can say is that the concept behind it and the modular setup is absolutely amazing. That being said... My music is very kick drum orientated (hardcore/industrial/techno) and I spend weeks, and sometimes months designing kick drums. If anything... I'd like to be able to use more modules. My Kontakt patches get quite intense with huge effect chains + more processing in my DAW... and then exported and processed more. It's an instant buy for me. Good work D16. I cannot wait to mess around with it.
