delete a preset in Arturia Mini V? (ver 2 not the brand new one)

Hi,
Does anyone know how to delete a non factory preset in the Arturia Mini-V? I haven't got the brand new one yet, I just got the "V4 Collection Classics" a few weeks ago (I'll upgrade if they give me a way to just upgrade the synths I have - but that's a different story).
I can't find a way to do this - but you *must* be able to delete presets...

You can do that, but its not easy if you dont understand how the system works.jbraner wrote:...you *must* be able to delete presets...
Are you good with computers? I.e. are you comfortable messing around in the filesystem?
I could explain if necessary.

Hi ENV1 - yeah, I'm good with the file system and command line etcENV1 wrote:You can do that, but its not easy if you dont understand how the system works.jbraner wrote:...you *must* be able to delete presets...

So there's no obvious way? At least it's not me then
The file system has a "database" doesn't it? OK - how do I do it?

OK. <takes a deep breath>
The system is based on Presets within SubBanks within MainBanks. The first thing you have to find out is where the MainBank that contains the preset-to-be-deleted is. To do that go to C:\ProgramData\Arturia\Mini V2\save
Depending on what you have in terms of presets, there will be one or more 'P' folders, starting with P0. You can either open each P folder and drag the 'NomPreset' file into Notepad so you can see its name, or you can check what position it has in the synths browser, the first entry would be P0, the second P1, and so forth.
Once you have the right MainBank, you will have to find the right SubBank. Same procedure as above, only this time the folders are labeled 'B' (B0, B1, etc.) and you drag the 'NomBanque' file into Notepad for identification.
Finally, when youre in the right SubBank, you will have to find the actual preset, i.e. the one you want to delete. This time the folders are labeled 'I' (I0, I1, etc.) and the file to identify the preset is named 'NomInstrument'. If there are many 'I' folders in the SubBank i would recommend to check the presets position in the synths browser first so you dont have to search the folder too long. Just remember that the first preset shown in the browser-list is I0 and you should be able to find the right one immediately.
Once you have located the right 'I' folder, delete it. (The whole folder.) The preset will be gone, but now you will have a gap in the folder-numbering. Close that gap by renaming all presets that followed the deleted one so that the 'I' folders are numbered in a contiguous fashion again. This renaming is necessary because otherwise the plugin will only load presets until it hits the gap, i.e. the ones after the gap wont be displayed. (I know, there will be a lot of renaming to do if the SubBank contains many 'I' folders, but its the only way.)
Once youre through with that, youre done.

With the new versions like e.g. Mini V3 it seems to be more easy as now each preset has it's own file with the presets name in the file name.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up ENV - I'll have a look at it.
It ocurred to me that the presets that I wanted to get rid of, which have "temp" in the name - may actually be *template* presets rather than *temporary* as I thought.
So maybe I should leave them.
I'll have a look anyway...

Youre welcome.
And dont worry, i wont hold it against you if you dont actually do it.
Having done it a couple of times myself i know its not exactly something you look forward to.

Actually, it doesn't look *that* bad - and if you delete one from the top of the list, you don't have to renumber everything - just renumber a few at the end, to "fill in" so that there are consecutive numbers (I do this with SONAR recent file lists in the registry).
I think I'll leave the "temp" stuff for now - as it may well be *templates* rather than *temporary* scratch pad stuff (which is why I thought I'd get rid of it).
I'll keep your notes for reference though

I havent actually tried that, but i dont think it will work due to the way the system works.jbraner wrote:...if you delete one from the top of the list, you don't have to renumber everything - just renumber a few at the end, to "fill in" so that there are consecutive numbers...
I think what would happen if you deleted any '0' folder (P0, B0, I0, i.e. the first one of the bunch) is that no banks/subbanks/presets would be loaded at all since there would be a 'gap' right at the start.
But as i said, i didnt actually check. If you do and it works let me know so i know it for future reference.

What I meant was - if you delete a 0, just rename the last number to 0 - rather than 1 to 0, 2 to 1, 3 to 2 etc etc

Ah. I see. Misunderstood you.
Yes, that would actually work, but it will inevitably lead to all the presets being relocated into other folders when the plugin does its 'alphabetical sorting' thing.
Example:
You have 4 presets named B, C, E and F
B will be in I0
C will be in I1
E will be in I2
F will be in I3
If you now add a preset and name it A, it will be put in I0, (since it will now be the first one alphabetically), and all the others will be moved one number up.
Same goes for 'inbetween' presets. If you already added A, and you now add another one and name it D, A/B/C will be left alone, E and F will be pushed up to I4/I5, and D will get the I3 slot.
You get the idea.
So if you delete I0, and rename say the last 'I' folder to I0, all of the presets will end up in a new folder and the preset you renamed to I0 will not remain in I0 but be put in a folder whose number corresponds to the presets alphabetical position in the lot. This 'shuffling' will take place as soon as the plugin is started and/or whenever a new preset is added. (Same goes for Banks and SubBanks too, obviously.)
Of course this totally doesnt matter unless you expect specific presets to be located in specific folders, so by all means feel perfectly free not to give a damn about this information.

No - that is good information!
It means my theory would work, and the plugin organises the actual numbers to make things alphabetical.
I'm also guessing that if I change the name of a category to match one that is already there - that it will merge the presets from the renamed category with the ones that are already in the existing category.
I realise this is all easier in the new version, but I just got the (V4) classics collection in April, and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more than I just paid for the collection to upgrade again. If they set us up with $9.99 for each instrument I have, I'll go for it, otherwise I'll wait for a sale.
(Or just leave them as they are)

Thats correct.jbraner wrote:It means my theory would work, and the plugin organises the actual numbers to make things alphabetical.
That wont work because you cannot create multiple Banks or SubBanks (or Presets for that matter) with the same name. (At least it didnt work when i tried that once.) So if you want to merge stuff from different Banks/SubBanks, im afraid manually is the only way.jbraner wrote:I'm also guessing that if I change the name of a category to match one that is already there - that it will merge the presets from the renamed category with the ones that are already in the existing category.

Why are you all messing around in the database? The problem with older versions is, like XILS stuff, these are not discrete files but entries in a database, which makes file management using file system based methods much harder. I wouldn't go there personally, it could really mess things up. Luckily there is an easier method - if you want to delete presets, or banks/sub banks use the standalone.
