I'm finding myself exploring sounds I guess would be called EDM or Dubstep or Trance, or whatever (not a big label guy), but I feel my love of acoustic based drum sounds needs to be updated. I've been focusing on listening to drum/percussion sounds in these EDM type styles, and I don't think I'm going to get there using my old drum kit faves.

I've tried a few electro drum synths, and felt more lost than satisfied!? So I'd like to hear what people much deeper into these styles are using to create those all-important rhythms.

Your top 3 or 4 faves would be much appreciated, and as usual, freeware and less expensive options would be a big plus. Also, as I'm looking to use many of these sounds in more rock and progressive styles too, any capable hybrids would be cool to learn about too.

Thanks!

Drumatic 4 - Synth based drums - http://drumatic.info/

Then some samples of 707s,808s & 909s - https://www.samplemagic.com/details/478 ... m-machines

I only use samples.

Nicky Romero's Kick from Sonic Academy, but I like to layer it with samples. For everything else, either Battery 4 or Studio One's Impact with handpicked drum samples.

Geist - for samples.

Ableton - Drumrack.

Softube's - Heartbeat (underrated I feel).

I mainly use samples for trance,
But just lately have been exploring Geist, Tremor and Waldorf Attack.
All are pretty good but take some time to get the sounds just right for what I need/expect.

Have also been looking at linplug RMV as I have heard good things about that.

Check out Neuro Hop Forum sample packs, they are free and have great brostep & dnb style drums.

They also have (legal) torrent downloads but I don't remember where.

- Bitwig Drum Machines (best integration with Arturia BeatStep)
- Arturia Spark (Love the sound and the whole software)
- Air Transfuser (The alternative to Spark. Great sound and patterns with low cpu usage)
- Addictive Drums 2 (for acoustic drums)

Maschine & lots of samples
Tremor (a distant second)
Drumatic 4 (close to Tremor, maybe above it considering the price)

NI Battery 3 and Xils-Lab StiX give me nearly all I need for electronic drums ( besides of mutisampled acoustic kits)

Having other specialised drum synths, and standard synthesizers as well, will add of course, but this duo already covers a wide array of sounds.

Thanks for all the input and enlightenment KVRians! This has been most helpful. Geist sure seems to come up a lot, but looks like I'll need to explore more affordable options at the moment (just getting my feet wet in this area).

It sure is a thin field for 64 bit free/cheapware for these drum synth/machines! One piece of gear I found fitting this niche is DubTurbo's DrumTroop. If you can handle its 16 outputs, it's a pretty impressive performer, IMO.

And as many of you have mentioned, I realize what I like best is more samples than just drums (a la Art of Noise, etc.). And this DrumTroop and a few others seem to include such sounds.

Also, I hate to bring up JM Jarre's name again, but does anyone know what drum machine he used on the older albums (Oxygene, Equinox)? Sounds 808ish to me, but I think nearly all drum machines sound that way I (just don't know the differences).

Thanks again everyone!
