Hi, Zentralmassiv.
ZentralmassivSound wrote:It IS totally unglued. I apparently understood the contest rules wrong, it said "no pre-mastering", so after I had a full mixed and mastered track I removed all compression and limiting from the master bus. The mix sounded much better with compression of course, e.g. the bassdrum is kind of mixed into the limiter. If you are interested I can give you the full mix I made just for your interest.
Just received your PM and the full mix - enjoyed it a lot, thanks - and replied to your PM a few moments ago.

No_Use wrote: I'm unclear about this to be honest. Ok, I've added this super reverb as a transition, but this was more as an 'intuitive idea', in general wouldn't 'making transitions' fall more in the category 'production work' (in other words, be a task of you, the producer) as we have a mixing challenge here (which as I understand it, actually doesn't involve any 'production' work) ?

Or you mean strictly mixing-wise the transitions could have been better ?

(Not want to start an argument or something, just like to clear this up :))

edit:
Trying to be more clear, by 'production work' I mean something like 'making significant changes to the original material', like (in this case) adding transition FX.
Sure, no problems, feel free to ask whatever you need.

I believe Compyfox could be more helpful in this matter, but I simply followed what he asked me while exporting the stems. My first stems were pretty full, with lots of reverb, delay, EQ and so on, but as Compyfox told me, they were pretty much already mixed that way. So, I was asked to export them as dry as possible, in order to let contestants figure out what could be done to make the track as good as possible.

In your case, I just think the transitions themselves are a little abrupt - maybe simple things like a long reverb or some delay could make them less "in-the-face". No need to add new risers, sweeps, anything like that.

Ok, got it and will keep it in mind for the second round.
Thanks for clarifying.

Here is my overhauled mix:

wave:

I've lowered the volume of the drums and readjusted the volume of the different loops slightly and I dialed the sidechain on the arps back, which also made some subtle EQ and volume adaptions necessary. They are not completely removed, but the effect is very subtle now and barely audible.
Hop you like my mix.
Good luck to all contestants!

I'm making one now.

I'll need 7 hours and I'll have something lol.

The effort is admired, but the first mix round is over (ended 21st).
Current mix round is only selected participants, with the goal to fix their mix according to given feedback.

Maybe see you in the next challenge

well, none the less. I made one - was in a rush.

special thanks to stillwell audio
for : 1973
badbussmojo

mda for loudness

ignite amps for emissary

rescue mk2 was a great help

as well as luftikus and Delay studio.

I used no compressor other than the non-linearity in bad buss mojo and as I understand it, mda loudness is a type of chorus. But I could be wrong.

Anyways, here's my "unofficial" mix,

I could not have even entered into the last contest - so if you want to make an exception lemme know - Otherwise; Enjoy the tune.

I had to write some other names down for my un-official entry because they deserve to be mentioned:

Nusofting's Reverbering
Voxengo's Amazing EQ
and Boogex

Oligarch Chorus
Classic Reverb and classic eq by kjaerhus
Ringmod i/o by B.Serrano
Autopan Modulator by Synthescience
Hysteresis by glitchmachines.

I used these and above to provide the effects which have a smiliar effect to the original - But the drums are punchier.

Here's my entry for the 2nd round:

wav (44.1/16)

mp3 (44.1/VBR best)

What I changed compared to the first round:

- I didn't change that much in the mix, because animehaus didn't have much to critisize
Just some volume automation and slight tweaking here and there which I didn't have time for in the 1st round to try to make the mix a little more coherent.

- Tried to make the transitions a little smoother (e.g. added a delay, transitions are not my strength though tbh)

- Slightly altered the last part, it's a little longer now. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that but no risk no fun hehe.
This is of course purely subjective, but I always felt the last part (for me the 'climax' of the track) might be a little short (compared to the rest of it), it goes full on, I start to get the groove and then it's over already, so I made it a bit longer now and added some breaks.
There's also a subbass now in the 2nd half of the last part to give it a bit more drive towards the end.

Hey, If you're not getting anough people. Then why not make it till the end of the month?
I'm not staff here - So it is not insubordinate of me to say.

If I'd known there were contests in this section - I would have posted. But frankly, I have not noticed a streamlined announcements section at top of forums. Just for a few important announcements like contests - etc.

Btw, I forgot to mention variety of sound, for their rescuemk2, tesslaProMKII, and slickHDR - I always use them in every track I make. Lexicon's Pantheon too, I mix reverbs - That and verbiage because it's slick echo electro sound.

We have several challenges on KVR, and all are handle within a month. Dragging the Mix Challenge out longer than it should (over 1,5 months incl. second mix round) is just too long and confusing for new songs to mix)

It's pinned! Why do people always overlook pinned threads?!

And I bump in regular periods as well! Actually, I do bump several threads regarding the mix challenge in regular periods of time. And all threads are cross-referenced.

I've been noticing this on all your other crazy posts on KVR recently - instead of posting new, EDIT them.

To the remaining participants:
22hours left for mix round 2.

Hi all,

Here is my mix for the second round:

MP3: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/717 ... %20Rd2.mp3
WAV: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/717 ... %20Rd2.wav

As mentioned by Animehaus, I reduced the bass and corrected the end of the track. Everything else stayed the same.

Better watch watch the defammation of character, or it "could" get legal. Last warning.
I come to this forum as a professional musician - Not to socialize.
But as to editing my posts - Well then; I will try.

Most phpbb boards have edit disabled in my experience, thanks.

Did you seriously just threaten me - the host of this challenge?
Not really a "professional" behavior, now is it? And this challenge is to socialize - not to just show off.

But maybe this is the wrong place for you on this board.

This is a group of elite dj's. And some of us have hopes of a career. It's unsavoury to imagine that something rude said could have a lasting effect on a professional reputation. I'm also an OK singer/rapper.

I'm just saying, it could happen for your future reference.
But in my Humble opinion; Most ppl here are aspiring pros or pros. This is a forum that costumer service queries are directed to for many professional companies. Socializing here is sharing our profession.

I won't mention this again, regardless if there is more said. Thankyou. See you next month.
