Decapitator by soundtoys is GREAT , but if you want sometime for tape saturation , every soundtoys plugin include 'analog' mode (really good).the little alterboy have a decapitator saturation algo on the output.Fabfilter Saturn is good too.

Another one VoS' plugins which has almost inaudible effect.
What????????????????
I have to be honest, I don't use VoS plugins for this reason. I think I'm just using them wrong though.

Post

Ferric TDS you have to use the limiter knob, dynamics and saturation. I find it best to tweak those two knobs after boosting with the "input" control, lower left of the VU meter, while using the limiter. Without the input control it can be hard to hear what it might be doing.

I use it on drums all the time. Love it. Wish 64 bit. But not going to be everyone's cup of pee.

Also love Fabfilter Saturn. And Ableton Live's Saturation plugin. It is actually really good. Wonder what it's based on, if anything.

I am enjoying TB ferox. It's free, and sounds great (be careful to set the gain staging properly).
It's tape-based.

Softube Saturation knob might be the simplest :

Klanghelm SDRR is quite deep and cheap, too :

FXpansion SingleMault gets some use, here too (not tape, but more "op-amp", transistor based):

If you like to get dirty, then AudioDamage might have some treat for you :

I also like Nick Row TubeDriver, for a tube emulation which can do subtle or more obvious.

Whole these are all great, only one of them is a Tape plugin, LOL :P

I just tried it. Another one VoS' plugins which has almost inaudible effect.

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA There isnt enough room on this message box to put the amount of 'HAHAHAHA's I need for this post.

If you can't hear anything, you have NO business caring about a tape plugin.

True but it's quite a bit more subtle than real tape. Satin, VTM, UAD Studer, and UAD Ampex are a lot better, IMO.

Oh sure, that's not the issue. But to hear 'almost inaudible' effects? That means you need to start back at the BASICS of EQ and Compression. Theres a lot of beginner courses on Youtube OP needs to check out.

True!

I'm demo-ing the new Sly-Fi plugs just now, and the saturation on the Axis EQ is very good, but Kaya just sounds wonderful to me.

Saturation imho doesn't do anything unless you use it in a mix w/o overdoing it. But once you introduce anything compression, ooopsy. Limiting? Death Magnetic...or steve albini....whichever comes first.

It seems to work nicely :tu: I also noticed it kees signal under 20 kHz (anti-alias probably).

Too bad it doesn't have built-in volume control. Also the installer is dreadful.

Yes, indeed !
But you can extract the .dll from the might mamuth installer using 7zip, it works fine this way.

SDRR is a very good plug but it doesn't do tape saturation so seeing it recommended on this thread is a little puzzling. Don't get me wrong; great value and worth having but in response to the OP I wouldn't have thought of it.

For tape saturation I would go u-he Satin all the way, because it's extremely flexible and has excellent sound quality, although there are certainly other good options such as VTM.

I don't know of anything free and good in this area.
