To operate the 64 bit (x64) KX77FREE plug-ins and the 32 bit (x86) version of SE PolyMod KX plug-in require MicroSoft files called "Visual C ++ Redistributable Package". These need to be installed only once on each PC that uses these plug-ins.
Link to get the 2015 version (the 2017 version is compatible, check your already installed packages):
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/downloa ... x?id=53587

About x64 VST:

VST2 recommended for VSTHost:
Load and Save XML presets menu does not work fine on Win 10 following the configuration used (to do list).
The GUI editor of VSTHost 1.56 stays incompatible when the plug-ins are used in VST3 not in VST2.
VST3 GUI works fine only with VSTHost 1.54.

Fruity Loop:
Select "Use fixed size buffers" in the plug-in options to win 25% of CPU use!

Reaper:
Load and Save XML presets menu does not work fine on Win 10 following the configuration used (to do list).
If you listen audio "pops" when you edit something on Reaper with Asio4All.
To fix it > FX windows > Compatibility settings > "Save minimal undo steps".he GUI editor of VSTHost 1.56 stays incompatible when the plug-ins are used in VST3 not in VST2. VST3 GUI works fine only with VSTHost 1.54.

To do list:
Load and Save XML presets menu does not work fine on Win 10 following the configuration and the DAW used.

Installation example:
1- Unzip and copy the VST3 folder in "C:\Programs\Common files\VST3".

2- To operate the 64 bit (x64) KX77FREE plug-ins require MicroSoft files called "Visual C ++ Redistributable Package". These need to be installed only once on each PC that uses these plug-ins, get the 2015 version or the 2017 compatible version (check your already installed packages):
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/downloa ... x?id=53587

3- In "Users\"your account"\Documents\VST3 Presets\xavier kalensky\"KX MODULAD", you copy all *.vstpreset files provided with the VST3.

4- If your DAW does not support VST3, change the extension of the plugin *.vst3 by *.dll (VST2) and copy the VST2 folder in "C:\Programs\Common files\VST2" or in your usual x64 VST2 folder...

5- Update the database of your DAW by scanning the plug-ins.

Note:
"Common Files" is a protected Windows system folder. Your DAW must be in Administrator mode to save the sequencer *.x16 files or your XML presets. If else you must save in your Document folder of your account or in out of protected Windows folders.

Just a bump for anyone who missed it. (I think it got lost among the 'lists' at the weekend.)

Finally tore myself away from the -x16 and -cse to spend some time with the Kx-Polymod. I've been trying to get up-close-and-personal with MacBeth's Elements before committing to a purchase, but two (solid) days with this synth and I'm no longer certain I even want one.
Some devs, it's almost a relief their site doesn't have a 'Donate' button.

Hi Syntilla,

Yes KX77FREE's VST are a very good compromise between the sound quality and the cpu use.
You have the same type of quality (or better) than commercial vsts without an expensive cpu use. Because I oversampled only the processes which need to be: like some Filters, the Distortion, the Vca and the Ring modulator. And the SE engine permits to manage the sleep mode of each module used inside.

I'm one of the first devs who implemented the Kxmod and other great features like the matrix with mini knobs before the majority of commercial vsts. Also the SE freewares are not cheap but they can be innovative and very multi-purpose for anyone who wants just support them.

Sure the SE development is slowly because Jeff translates his baby to the compatibility to Apple and a lot of SE devs are in standby.
But I'm little disappointed by the few support to SE (or other like) in KVR because SE and SynthMaker also permitted the development of lot innovative vsts, specially in the freeware and shareware products, which forced the classic commercial products to evoluate to a better quality in the last decade.

Hi M. Kalensky,

KX77FREE is not a name I associate with compromise - of any kind!
The commercial synth I was comparing the Kx-Polymod with was this one:

Usual caveats about YT audio aside, this should give you some idea of how it sounds:

Not unlike Kx-Polymod, I'd say - and your synth is way more flexible.

Consider your dream well and truly shared.
Thank you!

Hi,

Thanks to compare my vsts with this kind of hardware synths!
Sure the hardware with discrete components is normally better than vsts but generally they have a limited number of connections without any memories and they are monophonic...
So, this is why I prefer to use my vsts because now I can do what I want with SE but actually I prefer to consolidate my actual VSTs before to do others.

Post

kx77free wrote:... to compare my vsts with this kind of hardware synths ...
And not intended to flatter, either.
Burnie describes you as an 'overdemanding developer'.
The same could be said of Ken MacBeth.
His synths/modules sure look the part, but behind those slo-mo Verniers and faux-Bakelite knobs (not to mention the gold-plated keyboard!) there's a whole lot more than the generic synth-voicecard-on-a-chip that you'll find in almost every other synthbuilder's instruments.
He's not one to substitute mere engineering technique for hard-won craftsmanship.
And, in the words of Joe Meek, 'If it sounds right - it's right'.
KX77FREE instruments - like the MacBeths - are for those who can hear the difference.

And it's not the first time I've found myself comparing your synths to €5k hardware.
As a bit of a Synthi nut, I've long had the blog at thesynthi.de bookmarked (it can now be found here http://blog.thesynthi.de/). It hasn't been updated for a couple of years, but remains an essential resource.
So when PIN and Ramcur got together to make the 'Hornet' clone http://hornet-modular.de/2index.html, my first reaction was simply 'How do I raise the money?'.
But the demo mp3s were somewhat uninspiring, and from what little other information is available, it's clear that this is a very modern-sounding clone - look at some of the waveshapes! Like all the other software emulations (apart from Couprie's, which uses samples) the sines look like sines, the triangles triangles ... on the early-model VCS3s/Sythis, the sines, squares and triangles were barely distinguishable - they all looked like a 4-year-old's attempts to draw a house.
Nothing, of course, can replace the raw, visceral thrill of actually handling a hardware modular, but ... five grand ...?
I finally stopped trying to talk myself into buying one in July last year ...
... when, after 2 years working on the PolyMods, you gave the Kx-Synth-X16 a totally unexpected update. (Modulad users must have been even more surprised!)
Along with the much-improved Traps (which is all I'd ever really hoped for) came those new filters...
The SynthiQ type has the most convincingly vintage-70s character of anything I've ever heard in software.
And the VCS3 filter type transported me right back to my earliest schooldays and the (often terrifying) sounds that used to accompany many of the BBC's educational radio programmes. (Thanks, Radiophonics Workshop - I've almost recovered now!)
Call me old-fashioned, but I still tend to judge a synth by how it sounds.
And with even the most expensive software still costing only a tiny fraction of what the early hardware did (and not only 'in real terms'), I don't think anyone who judges a synth by any other criteria should consider themselves a musician - merely a consumer.
KX77FREE synths are not only free, but priceless.
None of the really dumb people I knew when I was young are young any more.

Hi Xavier,

I do think that your synths are at the top of the food chain in the free world.
I really like how everything is in a single page, and color-coded in the matrix.

One problem that I have had since I found them is that they do not work very reliably on any of the daws I tried them in: Reaper, Studio one, and FL studio. Even in the 32bit version of the daw. The latest release I tried in FLstudio and for some reason, they all stop taking mouse input.

Any idea about why that is? Any logs I could use to debug this?

Thanks!

Post

Hi,

Urlwolf@
You forgot something when the installation probably... I tested again on my classic 32 bit daws : Orion, FL, Samplitude, etc... I did not see something different than the old versions ???
Give me more details, please.
Did you uninstall the old versions before and rescanned your Vstplugins folder?

Anyway, I will download the last version of FL to check that.

******************************

This the FAQ of the Kx-PolyM-CSE :

Install infos

1- Unzip the Kx-PolyM.zip.

2- Copy the Kx-PolyM-CSE.dll and the "Kx-PolyM-CSE"* folder into your Vstplugins folder.

*Normally the plug-in copies its embedded files (*.sem, data, etc...) inside a folder with the same name when the plug-in is initialized for the first time by your host program. But sometime on Vista or Seven that doesn't work with Live, generally it is a bug about the rights. So this is why the plug-in folder is in the zip ...
You must be logged in administrator not in simple user because you must have all rights on the "vstplugins" folder generally installed in the "Program file" folder which is protected by Windows.

FAQ:

1 - Why the oscillators are muted?
You selected types or numbers for waveforms which are not inside the plug-in folder.
This plug-in uses Kx77free's waveforms built with the Kx-Modulad. These files are classified in 3 quality: low, med, hi,
only the med quality (498 ko) is compatible with the Kx-PolyM plug-in.
They must be copied inside the root of plug-in folder.
Don't erase the data.kxw file because the plug-in uses it to locate the waveforms!

2 - Why my host cannot load the SEM modules when the plug-in is loading?
You forgot to copy the "Kx-PolyM-CSE" folder into your Vstplugins folder.

Normally the plug-in copies its embedded files (*.sem, data, etc...) inside a folder with the same name when the plug-in is
initialized for the first time by your host program. But sometime on Vista or Seven that doesn't work with Live,
generally it is a bug about the rights. So this is why the plug-in folder is in the zip ...
You must be logged in administrator not in simple user because you must have all rights on the "vstplugins" folder generally installed in the "Program file" folder which is protected by Windows.

3 - How can I reduce the CPU use?
This plug-in is optimized but if you patch with a wrong way you will increase the CPU use!

- First, do the difference between the source signals. The polyphonic signals use more CPU, one modulation per note played.

Monophonic:
Lfo, Noise, Lfo Eg, SH, Midi Ctrls.

Polyphonic gate on (note on):
Kbd, Vel.

Polyphonic alway running:
Kxmod, Vcos, Ring Modulator, Egs (to release end).

- With the matrix, do not select a source if you don't use it.

- Select off or None on the selectors (sub matrix, ring, filters).

- Set the level of the unused generators to 0 (led off).

- Avoid to use oversampled filters* and the polyphonic oversampled x4 distortion with poly presets!
You need to oversample x4 the distortion only if you work on presets with very high frequencies.

4 -Midi Learn Setting:
The Midi Learn setting is saved in the bank and in the preset.

5 - Beta-testing results:
This is a stable release, it was tested on 32 bits and 64 bits Windows with the main VST hosts:
Cubase SX, Cubase SE, Cubase 5, Samplitude, Orion, Cantabile, Energy XT, Reaper, FL, Live, VstHost, Chainer, Sonar...

6 - Minimum requirements:
Windows (32 or 64): Xp sp2, Vista, Seven...
Any compatible VST 2.3 32 bit host with Asio driver.
Need a vst 32 bridge (jbridge) with some 64 bit hosts (Live 64 bit).
Any old mono SSE2 processors >= : P4, Athlon K8.

This plug-in is not compatible with the old Athlon XP processors!

A 64 bit VST3 version of this plug-in will be available when SE 64 bit will be stable
and when the conversion of my SDK2 32 bit SEM modules to 64 bit modules will be end...
So if you want to use 32 bit VSTs with your 64 bit host and if this one has not a VST
32 bridge (64 bit version of Live), you can use the jbrige 32/64-64/32 vst bridge (20$ only):
http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge.

Note:
Your host and Jbrigde must run in administrator mode:
To solve this, locate theirs shorcuts, right-click them, choose "Properties", and in the "compatibility" tab enable
"Run this program as an administrator option".

The KX77FREE plug-ins are FREEWARES, so 20$, it's a good deal!

7 - Recommended configurations:
All Dual Core or Quad Core configurations with host programs optimized for these processors.

8 - Know problems:

Large Soundfont banks (Modulad and PolyMod):
You can listen an audio glitch during the program change if the GUI editor is closed because the loading process is called by the DSP when the GUI is off. If you use the program change in your host session with large soundfont banks, keep the GUI editor of the plug-in open.
To avoid to use too much memory with large soundfont banks, you can use the free sf2 editor "Viena" provided by:
http://www.synthfont.com

FL Studio:
The plug-in uses less CPU (-25%) and the wav export works fine with these Wrapper options:
- Use fixed size buffer.
- FL 9 and upper -> Allow threaded processing must be enabled (on quad core).
The Midi Learn doesn't work with FL, FL locks the CC for its automation.

Orion:
To change the values of the knob fields, use the "Caps lock" key.

Samplitude 15 (Synth-x16 and Modulad):
Minor graphic bugs with the knobs fields (classic SE knobs),
they appear blank if you choice a preset in the preset list.
You need to click on to see the value.
You should use the plug-in preset popup menu ("Pst", on the bottom).

9 - Midi learn:

All controllers can be edited with the Midi learn (right click).

Caution:
CC 120 = All sounds off
CC 123 = All notes off

The default setting is all parameters set to "none".
The current setting is saved in the bank or in the preset.

*******************

I hope that will help you.

@Syntilla

You know, I never played on Synthi, it was a very good challenge for me!
All I done for this VST, it is just some ideas based on my musician experience and also because I'm good in the empiric method of DSP researches... Dream -> What I want -> What I can do with C++ and SE -> try, tests, listening and if it is right for my brain and my ears, I keep and I finalyze.
Because I do not sell something, I can work without any commercial stress (I'm stressed also but not by the internet timing), I do not follow the end users and the VST market to do hamburgers, I do what I want but I'm listening always my users.

And, it's very important, a lot of peoples help me by sending theirs recordings, docs, worked on the skin, etc...

.. is all anyone really needs to know about KX77FREE ...

There's an excellent chapter on EMS in the book Analog Days, available free (without images) as .pdf here: http://www.spontis.se/

And the EMS home page (still over 15 years out of date) now resides here: http://www.emssynthesisers.co.uk/

Richard Brooks's Synthiaks was originally pitched to Robin Woods - current EMS owner, having joined the company just 6 months after it started - as an 'official' emulation, but he declined. It was based on his earlier VCS5, which had a bit of a makeover a few years back as the Triton - http://www.vickers-armstrongs.co.uk/vir ... ritons.htm

The ele4music site has long gone, but Synthia2 is still available from vst4free (and a few other places) - http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=753

And I seem to remember Ninecows saying the source files for Cynthia had been lost in a disk crash or something ... so, not likely to be updated.

There are plenty of other Synthi clones out there, too, of course - each with it's own character.
But, payware or free, the KX-Synth-X16 really is the only one worthy of serious attention.
None of the really dumb people I knew when I was young are young any more.
