Best VSTI's for Synthesizing Electronic Kick Drums

I can't say which VST is best for synthesizing drums but I can say my favorite is u-he's Bazille (big surprise).

In my opinion, resonating filters are better suited to synthesizing kick drums than most oscillators. One thing you can do with Bazille's filters that makes them particularly nice, you can ping them. This means that if you set the filters resonance to a point just below self-oscillation, sending a short pulse (a very short envelope or burst of noise) to the audio input will cause the filter to ring with a very natural decay. Applying an envelope to the filter frequency while it is ringing produces a very nice kick drum sound and the attack portion can be shaped by making changes to the signal which you are using to excite (or ping) the filter.

One benefit of this method is, since the filter is not constantly oscillating, the phase starts at 0 every time it's pinged.

u-he's Ace can also do this but there aren't as many envelopes to shape the sound.

With simple sounds like kick drum and drums/percussion in general it makes sense to use samples in my view.
I am using mostly an ancient drum sample module for 10 bucks and my DAW's internal drums :hihi:

There is an older plugin by Angular Momentum, Kicklab, for 39 dollars.

A free stripped-down version of it is also available.

I like Massive, Zebra, Bazille and Z3ta for making kickdrums and other percussion sounds. Then just sweeten them further with some external effects and sample it. A fully-featured synth with lots of envelopes and good modulation capabilities can get you sounds even many specialized drum synths cannot pull off.

I got a pretty sweet (to my ears) kick out of Spectral this week, just tweaking one of the bundled kick presets. It's just 2 Oscs, a sine for the transient and overall shape plus a pulse wave for some bump, each with a slightly different filter & envelope. I piped the output through my usual (of late) stack of Tricomp ("Drum Machine" preset), Pro EQ, Limiter. Great tech kick, IMHO. And that leaves 2 Oscs and their filters free for more nuanced modeling, perhaps for those who prefer more acoustic sound kicks.

Admittedly, something like Spectral is overkill for a kick, but if you've already got a good, multi-osc/multi-filter synth with phase sync on the oscs, it should be able to bump.

Big fan of xoxos' Bong for electronic drums in general, but for a dedicated kick synth, Saltline's Korzenie Kick has a lot to offer: http://www.saltline.co.uk/korzenie.html

How about Image-Line Drumaxx ?

It's not typical synthesizing, but also it's not using sampled stuff. I actually like playing with it. And it's not only for kicks...

Professional technicians are assessed by the abilities they possess.
Amateur technicians are assessed by the tools they possess - and the amount of those tools, with an obvious preference to the latest hyped ones.

Prism has no effect on a pure sine ;)

Sounds great, time to start a special deal for Bong!

Never saw the fuss with that synth. Very Plastic sounding to me. My favs for making Kicks are Synth1 and Linplug Free Alpha. Both can do very 'tough' sounding kicks (I use them for techno mainly).
