Thanks for that... I'll look into the PD samples as I'll (also) be using them in commercial production, preferably without attribution
Commercial libaries in this area also welcome

Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

You can get interesting modem-type sounds by playing back tape data storage from old computers, like ZX Spectrum or C64. Sounds like noises in this track:

Just google 'zx spectrum wav files'. Or look here for some tapes in wav format.

Ok, this might be a weird question but.. I'm wondering what the legal standpoint would be here.evilantal wrote:What an awesome idea! If i use these games as audio wavs in a commercial recording, would i be ok?
Like, in the same way when i sample percussion on pots and pans, the pots and pans manufacturers wouldn't sue for copyright infringement on the sound of their pans...

Theoretically it is valid issue, to be on the very safe side, there are some public domain programs, but then you would need to convert them to audio. If one would go for this, actually it would be better to take a step further and make your own data packets, like fill memory with random strings and save them. I could possibly post such, if you like.

See here: http://waveforms.fairlyconfusing.net/20 ... sions.html
I created a data transmission audio file, that is free and doesn't contain third party code, so it's cleared to use. I made it by creating pictures and loading them into emulated machine and then saving it to audio file. The procedure is quite simple, which I wrote down, if you like to try it yourself and you are not familiar with the machine.

I'll go this route, since i indeed make commercial recordings.
Thanks for taking the time!

{I used to take screengrabs of the windows 95 defrag screen, and render it in gray scale, and do that!}
