They we're insanely expensive new. IIRC 250 000 SKR which translates to roughly 35 K $ today.

BTW it's a digital recorder which makes kinda pointless. I have no idea why anyone would pay anything for it except for the cool factor. But it's hardly 8K cool.

dunno why, but I've always wanted a Nagra - even just a little one . . .

Ahh the joy of having a big physical object for your finished work.

I think about variax guitars quite often and even if I could convince myself that the sound quality of a variax is the same as the original model it still wouldn't feel the same. And while even if I did buy a variax I'd still keep my current stable of guitars around.

I owned a Nagra Lino for about a week before returning it to bhphoto. It was bloody awful, noisy as hell. I hope their other digital recorders are better.

A reel to real requires mechanical motors and lots of moving parts. In the old days reel to reel recorders were stored in their very own highly insulated rooms. That's why they have remote controls.

I can remember back in the 70's maybe even the early 80s When W4 (WWWW FM Detroit) was still a rock station. They would play local artist submissions...However they required that the format be some outrageous reel to reel format that only pricier studios could afford.
