If you don't own much hardware yourself then my first suggestion would be to visit a synth shop with a good range for you to play about with. For example, take a holiday to Berlin and go to Schneider's Laden!
I won't name a favourite, but i've dug out some of my favourite synth-related weblinks for you.
Firstly i've always admired the build quality, looks and engineering ingenuity of some of the early synths. Some are beautiful works of art made for professional musicians, albeit rather impossible to carry to a gig. For example check out the EMS website:
http://www.emssynthesisers.co.uk/emsprods.html
Here's a sample of one of their monster synths:
There's a film about modular synths which I haven't got to see yet, I definitely want to watch it soon. You can see the trailer for free though, here it is:
http://www.idreamofwires.org/
The BBC did a great documentary too (maybe you've seen it) called "Synth Britannia". Here it is, the whole film this time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK1P93r9xes
Also, more generally i'd recommend you check out what people are doing with modular synthesizers these days. Nothing like the standard all-in-one synths we've become used to. Talking of which, my final link is an SoS article discussing how to get started with modular synths (lots of pics and links in there too). I hope you find some of this helpful, good luck with your project.

Hey Jo,
You know I like hardware,
but I have 3 rack units, just.
Cheetah MS6
Virus TI 1st gen
Nord Modular G2 Engine
These suit me coz they are all interfaced with a computer
>>
I'll find the 2 TI soft interfaces and post them up here.
Cheetah is a Win98 style, but clean and funky(icon) in an old skool way
G2 is also minimal in the soft UI, but the possibilities of the patching interface are mind-boggling.
The cobalt and red of the unit have been mentioned and are Clavia's calling card.
If you want to see the modular soft, here is the link to the demo->
>hmm, can anyone find it?<
I will post a screen of a complex patch
Yeah, check Clavia Brynte- they are quite successful

My favorite out of the ones I've had, I would probably say hands down for the Access Virus B
Today I have a Virus Ti, but the B version felt more directly in some way

Heh. I like my old KORG DW-6000. Only thing I don't like so much is no velocity sense. But I still like it. Another thing, it would make a good anchor for a fishing boat, lol. It lives in the studio mainly. Sometimes I take it out and feed it some audience, but not so much these days.
