I have previously heard Bartok.
Bartok - Music for strings, Interesting but not one of my favorites. I recall hearing some music of his that I liked but now cannot locate it to find the title. Ok I added Bartok to my list to get some of his CD's from the library.

Just heard Béla Bartók, Viola concerto

Not bad!

Also Béla Bartók, Viola concerto

Nice!

I can only share some of my own orchestral music, these are (rather poor) live-recordings from their respective premieres in Hamburg in 2012 and 2013.

and a rehearsal excerpt from Windschatten, with some artificial reverb (B2) added, as this was recorded in a dry rehearsal studio:

Liszt?
György Kurtág

A few that I heard were not of my liking.
It is the percussive crystalline sounds that I do not like. I like full orchestral pieces but there are many exceptions to this rule. Many. If you have a specific work for me to try let me know.

György Ligeti
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... i+symphony
Heard a few pieces but none turned me on.

As for Dmitri Shostakovich, I have some of his works but cannot recall the names. As Penderecki years ago I briefly liked Utrenja. But then lost all interest in it.

Found this by Penderecki and like it

I will add all four cmpsoers to my list to get their CD's from the library and perhaps Under a more relaxed time I will appreciate them

William Walton - a lot of film music starts here, that isn't nicked from the Russians.
Briefly heard 1 and 2.

Will get both for my collection. I have #3, Nice!

William Walton. I will check out his symphonies. Briefly heard a few and I hear possibilities.

Thanks for the suggestions

Mertens is someone I had some talks about with my friend Alessandra Celletti, here herself with Roedelius (sorry for the blurred video):

Here she's solo:

Another Italian, Ludovico Einaudi:

Do I need to mention Michael Nyman?

Also there's that new guy called Philip Glass ;) .
Thanks for the suggestions. Ludovico Einaudi was the best performance in my opinion.

Simon,

I have Spectrality - The Recent Years.

Doktrin der Ruhe and Windschatten are very Nice. I am impressed. None of home stereos nor car play mp3. In any case I always prefer wav’s. It would be great to hear it in the car or better with headphone as I am falling asleep. Some of best listening happens for me in the process of falling asleep.

I can send you some dl links to uncompressed wavs, they must be lying somewhere on those servers.

Addendum to the Original Post

Let me explain what I am looking for a bit more clearly than I did on the OP.

I prefer symphonic music, piano and violin concertos are fine.
Music in the Classical genre.
I generally like complexity.
I like Adagios
I like Romantic music but very flexible here.

Disregard all the above if you if you have a feeling I may just like your suggestion. I have heard most of the great works so I am looking for newer works from composers born after World War 2. Also undiscovered or underappreciated works from obscure composers of any era that you think are special.

Generally do not like:
Loud drums. OK if in the climax
Also do not like loud crystalline sounds often found in minimalist music.
Usually do not like vocals.
Do not like dissonance.

I will get more of his symphonies.

If you have a specific composer or work that may appeal to me please let me know.

Although you said you did not like loud drums, I have to suggest Ionisation by Edgar Varese.

Simon,

Your Edgar Varese suggestion did not turn me on.
I do not like drums and drum beat. But hard to believe I sometimes listen to trance! What a contradiction!

Please try again with another suggestion.

Thanks for the Doktrin der Ruhe and Windschatten.

For contemporary stuff, I'm quite fond of Chilly Gonzales' Solo Piano albums.

I also enjoy Famous Places album by Goldmund (mostly solo piano):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sbwd3tPLlXo

both are what I'd call "pretty" music, which is to say pretty much all the songs are pop-song length and not particularly challenging listening but sometimes you just want to listen to some pretty melodies. Satie-esque.

Regardless of the fact, that this is "your" thread about your preferences, I had to make that suggestion because I consider Varese to be one of the most interesting composers from the 20th century.

Somewhat very rare, but try to find a recording of Lenny Bernstein's Beethoven C Minor String Quartet (#14) played by the ENTIRE Wiener Philharmoniker. It's like Beethoven's missing 10th symphony. The Youtube is here (but doesn't really do the recording justice).

I also didn't see Schubert on your list but the 9th and 10th Symphonies are great early Romantic works. Ditto his Trout and Maiden quartets.
