I am working on warm ambient music. Is their any free vst that would sound like the instruments in Brian Eno's 1/1 from "Music for Airports", the dripping synth from Dan Gibson Solitude's "Origins", or the instruments that Liquid Mind uses in "Velvet Morning" .
Thanks,

Reverb. Demo Valhalla shimmer or get STW Reflex and turn it way up. Works with all sorts of clean synth sounds.

Post

A good subtractive synth paired with a smooth reverb should get you there for most of that.

Tyrell is a free VST:

Your DAW probably has a usable reverb, though the Valhalla verbs are great and inexpensive.

You might also want to pick up a copy of Computer Music magazine, as it should come with a DVD containing some good free synths.

Valhalla Shimmer is $50 = 45.91 Euro (because of the over inflated dollar). Nothing free about that.

I'll start the list of freebies by mentioning SuperWave P8:

SuperWave P8, a completely FREE virtual analogue synthesizer.

If you're looking for great leads, pads and strings, then check out this beast of a synth. Don't forget to check out the P8's big brothers, the Professional and Trance-Pro which both feature upgraded specifications and new preset patches.

Most stuff by HG Fortune (RIP)

I second HG Fortune wholeheartedly.

Post

Yes, I do use HG Fortune's Protoplasm, but I am trying to find an instrument that is not scary.

M42 and M51 synths are warm sounding IMHO

Post

Yes, the M42 and the M51 are what I am looking for. Any more that sound down to earth?

Post

I don't feel like listening to those long videos, can you specify a moment?
For ambient stuff I find the usual analog-type synths not very helpful, I guess synths which use samples are better for that. Usually those are not free, though. But there are affordable ones such as Psychic Modulation's Aethereal at 39 dollars.

Post

Absolutely anything. its all about the effects, and in the case of MFA that would notably be tape looping.
my other modular synth is a bugbrand

Post

There are some synths which allow you to load your own samples, but I wonder if it is legal for instance to sample the sound of the demo version of a quality commercial synth and import those samples into a free synth 8)

Brian Eno:

"Which puts me in mind of the first piece on Music For Airports (Editions EG). I had four musicians in the studio, and we were doing some improvising exercises that I'd suggested. I couldn't hear the musicians very well at the time, and I'm sure they couldn't hear each other, but listening back, later, I found this very short section of tape where two pianos, unbeknownst to each other, played melodic lines that interlocked in an interesting way. To make a piece of music out of it, I cut that part out, made a stereo loop on the 24-track, then I discovered I liked it best at half speed, so the instruments sounded very soft, and the whole movement was very slow. I didn't want the bass and guitar - they weren't necessary for the piece - but there was a bit of Fred Frith's guitar breaking through the acoustic piano mic, a kind of scrape I couldn't get rid of. Usually I like Fred's scrapes a lot, but this wasn't in keeping, so I had to find a way of dealing with that scrape, and I had the idea of putting in variable orchestration each time the loop repeated. You only hear Fred's scrape the first time the loop goes around."

Sleeve notes : "1/1" (Acoustic and electric piano; synthesizer.)

For more earthy sounds, I like Synth 1 and charlatan(with delay and reverb). There are soundbanks of pads for
both of them that are worthwhile. With the H.G. Fortune synths, I turn off one or two of the oscillators for a more transparent and less "scary" sound.
I also recommend STW Reflex Free for spaciousness.
