I've been trying to find this album for probably 10+ years. Help me track it down.

+++ The details are sketchy but this is how I remember it +++

Years ago a magazine (Keyboard magazine?) did a review of an album that was made entirely from 9 seconds of sampling the sound a drinking fountain. So like they'd take the sample and shape it into a kick drum, then take the sample and make a bell sound, take the SAME sample and make fx etc.... I've been wanting to hear this album for a long time now, but worry I will never figure out what it's called.

Does anyone know what the album was called or where I might find it?

Post

I am intrigued. Google does not help.

I know Herbert did albums like that, but not with a fountain. There was one done with a sample of a bomb falling and exploding in libya and another of the sounds of his pet pig being slaughtered and processed.

Are you sure you haven't miss remembered what the sample was of?
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a drinking fountain, and it wasn't made by anyone well known, at least not to me. More of an independant project it seemed like. Again, the whole album was based off of just this single 9 second sample (now maybe it was actually 11-or 15, but I remember 9). The concept has always amazed me, but I never did get to hear what the results were, because I only read a review about it.

Not a fountain, but paper noises:

Not what you're looking for i guess, but interesting nonetheless - every artis was given either a word or a sound which was then made into a piece of music. Some pretty awesome stuff on there.

It's not what you're looking for, but here's one from 1963 made using just the sound of a door and a sigh (as you may have guessed from the title):

Pierre Henry, "Variations for a Door and a Sigh" or "Variations pour une Porte et un Soupir" -

Irresistible Force sampled it on his track "High Frequency" from the electronic ambient album "Flying High: http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/cla ... igh-611239.

I'm intrigued about the album you're talking about.

Just bought it, not very many copies left of them out there though.

Yeah, interesting. I couldn't listen too long though (you can find it on Amazon), there's just not a whole lot you can make out of a door squeak and a sigh. lol But it's kinda like, well all we have is soup cans, how can we photograph it? It's like, is it art, if so, is it good art? Really good, or really bad? Or is it just soup cans on the shelf?

Post

Well you know all art is useless

Still pretty damn creative.

I had song I made in Alchemy entirely from a sample of a forklift starting up, idling, raising and lowering its forks, and then clanging them to the ground. I never released it and I think it's backed up on a now defunct hard drive.

It wasn't art, nor was it of any use :hihi:

I've made songs just using the pencil tool in Sound Forge and manipulating it with the built in effects. That was particularly difficult because it isn't a multitrack sequencer. I had to make lots of little files of predetermined durations and then copy and paste and mix them together as I went along. What can I say... it was a slow day at work! These are interesting exercises, but the results are not often the most aesthetically pleasing.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

i've too made a song using a recording of a inflating balloon! :)

you can also find the kontakt file with all the patches I have used

With todays DAWs and fx possibilities making a whole album from a sample is not really that groundbreaking any more. Of course if someone could generate a whole vocal line from a water fountain, that would be something...

Surely it was different a decade ago.

That's brilliant! :tu:
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

I think so, but, if that isn't one's goal, I still think that it can be either a fun or useful exercise. I like bosone's track above because even though there is a lot of variety, you can almost feel the surface of the balloon in the sound.

thanks for listening the track!
actually i know what i made is not unusual or original. for me it was a nice "exercise" to use all kontakt capability and to force myself to get ideas and techniques on how to make *this* sound for *this* purpose in the song.
I think anyone can learn something by doing tracks like this one!
