Hi Szalonykp
"The string noise around 4:08 was a creative choice - so cutting it out wasn’t what I wanted."
I am not quite sure what you mean. I did some cutting on the clean bass but I can't find any cutting around 4:08. No clean bass playing there anyway.
Is the time correct? Which track contains this string noise you are talking about?
thank you

Sorry - in your mix it should be around 4:14. It's this sound in "guitar shred L" at the end of the chord:mixedmind wrote:Hi Szalonykp

Hi Szalonykp,
Honestly, this time I did not expect to reach the second round. So my surprise was great to see that I am still in the race. That's awesom, thanks man! That was the first time a had to re-amp the guitars.
I am really impressed by your detailed comments. You mentioned things I would have overlooked otherwise. Those comments are showing a good and deep analysis of all tracks. I downloaded all top 6 and listened to them again, and read your comments in parallel. Everything is comprehensible, some points of course are a question of taste. Now I will rework my mix and I will try to follow all your comments.

Thank you for your detailed comments! Full of extremely useful info. I will say that the drums were a bit of a personal point of contention (with myself...), probably because I've never really mixed metal and haven't listened to very much outside of more polished "nu-metal" which would entail a different mix.
I'm excited to have made it to round two too.
Tutu?

Hi Szalonykp,
I really appreciate all of the great feedback. Unfortunately, I will not be able to get back to my computer until after the deadline, so I won't be able to take the full time for round 2.
Anyway, I took a quick stab at making the mix better (and following your instructions). It ended up being a few seconds longer than my first mix. I hope you like it!

Sounds good - looking forward for your updated mixes
Thanks - will write some feedback (this time shorter ) after the 2nd round will end. Sad to hear that you didn't had time to work on it more - as you can probably read from between the lines of my original feedback I was counting for a big makeover .mkd wrote: I really appreciate all of the great feedback. Hi Szalonykp,
Here is my final mix for round 2. I tried to follow all your comments. And I added some delay and reverb on some spots to bring more life into the mix.

For the issue with the hiss I bought a new plugin from Waves. I think it's one of this magic plugins ....
cheers

Here is my entry for the second mix round.
I changed a lot(!) of things according to the info that was given to me. As I didn't listen to the other entries (still! no time!), I didn't fall into the trap to copy somebody and rather let myself inspire from the song.
Changes:
- Sub Kick lowered by 3,5dB (sounds less muffled now, more "power metal" - rather feel than "hear")
- Drum Ambient tracks lowered by 1 to 1,5dB, which reduced the overall harshness
- I worked A LOT(!) on the distorted bass and guitars to get a more modern metal vibe. I changed some EQ (post cabinet and group EQ)
- I created "fake" double tracks of the shred guitars ("hass effect" type modulation delay, focus on "high frequencies, mixed along in a subtle to the rest of the guitars, panned opposite to the original guitar position)
- I added a tape machine to both the distorted bass and the shred guitars (15ips, 16 track machine, bias at normal IIRC). Which is basically the icing on the cake for this particular sound before hitting the sum
- I used a lot(!) of automation (volume, send FX, EQ automation for the "harmonics" of the solo guitar), some of the effects are really subtle, but it's adding more to the "dramatization"
- I added two new send FX (a Flanger for the metal bass, another "modulating" reverb type thing - to the clean chorus guitars)
Work hours invested: roughly additional 3,5-4 hours
Files can be found here:
Palu - Matsumia Experience R2 (StudioCompyfox) (WAV, 48/24, ca 106MB)
Palu - Matsumia Experience R2 (StudioCompyfox) (MP3, 48/24, VBR 320kbit, ca 11,3MB)
And if I'm not mistaken, all round 2 entries are accounted for now?
