uploading it to soundcloud diminishes the quality?

seem to remember it uploads as 320 mp3 (so that's what people can download) but streams at 128mbps?

Most online streaming solutions use compression algorithms to decrease the size of files, whether that is re-encoding or their own custom (which I believe YouTube does).

When uploading be sure to:
- upload a WAV initially; and
- leave .5db headroom.

I always upload 320kbps mp3s. My upload speed is so bad it would take days to upload a song in WAV format.
Well, maybe not days, but a lot of time at least.
I always make sure there's some headroom though, as I've had the distortion problem with tracks too loud for how it processes the audio, or plays it back, or whatever's causing it.
