Experiment: Can you spot which is analog and which is digital? SH-101 vs TAL Bassline

So I posted this on my personal FB and was really intrigued by the results. Perhaps you guys want to play along too? Here is a zip with 2 files playing an identical melody. Can you spot the difference between my SH-101 (hardware) and TAL 101 Bassline (software)?
Note: There is *no* processing/eqs/compressors or anything. Just raw audio from both playing identical Midi.

ps: apologies if this is in the wrong subforum..

I think short clips like that are difficult to tell as the parameters are static throughout the clip, the filter cutoff for example. The difference is often heard while adjusting synth parameters. If I had to decide I'd say clip 2 was analog, but it's more of a gut feeling than anything.

That's a really short snippet indeed, just about 2 seconds and then repeated.
I'll guess anyway: clip 1 is the real machine?

The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

Yeah, clip1 has just a tad less highs and definition, and somewhat warmth, so I'd say that is analog.

Clip one sounds kind of 'purple' and chewy but clip two is more 'puce' and salty/bitter. So by that reckoning I'd say they're both, in reality, sounds from a genuine CS80.

The sounds are not exactly the same, there's more pwm modulation going on in the first clip for example. I own real SH-101 and Tal Bassline too, have to make such comparison at some point, very interesting thing to do anyways! I would actually say that the second clip is the hardware
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

yes ,more pwm modulation and also Sub oscillator is higher on clip 1 ...please repeat the test with more carefull patching...

thanks for the replies guys. Again, interesting to read. In case a few more people want to chime in, I will post the result tomorrow. As for the settings, the GUI isn't exactly matched up to the real one, so I duplicated it by "sight" first, then tried to adjust to make them as close as possible. It's quite hard to make them 100% identical though. Maybe I'll post another example with filter cutoff modulation. Thanks!

Here's a comparison I did some time ago. This is between a real SH-101 and Strobe.

I think I saw this posted elsewhere and I saw the results so won't play the guessing game with this But they're close ... Btw. one thing I've noticed with my hardware SH-101 and Tal-Bassline (also own Strobe so its the same thing with that) is that the SH-101 seems to 'compress' the signal more, like it's more 'even'. Ah, hard to explain exactly what I want to point out, need more coffee!himalaya wrote:Here's a comparison I did some time ago. This is between a real SH-101 and Strobe.
