The 'Buttons' speak and spell are not that hard to come by, there are always a bunch on eBay at any given time. The grey Japanese one however, I imported from Japan at a whooping price tag :|

Afraid not, a Speakjet is a modern (2004) device made to sound old :)

<peeks at ebay> Ah. Looks like membrane ones are much more expensive than they used to be. A few years back when I got mine button models were going for 2-3 times the price of a membrane model, now they seem to be fairly similarly priced.

I dont doubt it!

Reading about S.A.M. for the C64 in this thread made me want to mention that there was a S.A.M. for the ATARI 8 Bit computers as well. But a video on youtube showed that both really sound the same and S.A.M. was available for the Apple II + Lisa as well.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to chipspeech and chipsounds 2.0

Post

S.A.M. was indeed pretty much the same on those platforms. The Apple II version needed a DAC card to be added to the system. There is a guy making modern versions of that (I got one, didn't try it yet). While of course the C64 version used the $D418 4bit volume-as-a-DAC trick to do so.

Cheers.

Does anyone remember the Magic Voice module for the Commodore 64 home computer?

Image

I remember how great it worked with the Wizard of Wor game cartridge.

I don't recall the module, but I most certainly remember the game! Could only play it at a friend's house, because I had an Amstrad CPC, which no one else had.

(Gosh, we're old.)

OMG Wizard of Wor... Fantastic... I think I had that on the 2600... I remember being blown away on the C64 with the "Accolade presents..." and the sampled engine rev... 4 bits of ecstasy...
You need to limit that rez, bro.

The Magic Voice speech module had a pre-programmed vocabulary of 235 utterances spoken with a pleasant female voice (pre-Siri):

We have the magic voice unit (see our gear photo), it might appear in a subsequent release of chipspeech.

Basically its another PARCOR/LPC voice chip (Toshiba T6721A), and we already have plenty of that as is :)

Ah, yes! Its box is hidden in plain sight amongst the "Where's Waldo?" of colorful speech synthesis gear. I hope it does find its way into a release of Chipspeech.

Wow! I did not realize how common that chip was. Its debut must have spawned a whole market of affordable speech synthesis products.

Hi

I know I should give more updates and estimates, just so busy, too much to make demo tracks
(which will appear sooner than later)
What I can give you however is a glimpse of what you can achieve in 2 minutes live with a MIDI keyboard and a few knobs.

Speak And Spell (TMS5XXX) style LPC data bending:

And SP0256 data bending (Data from a prototype Car Phone system that probably never saw the light of day)

more to come...
