Xhip- by Xhip ?
:tu: All is good

Synth1 seems to blend in, why is this? It was even the synth used in the "guess this synth" thread and only a few people guessed right.

Post

String Studio
Rayblaster
Bazille
Amber
Aalto

Unlike anything else

Enzyme
Glass Viper

Still unique but not totally

Polygon
Loom

Bazille is definitely on the list for me.

Too much clarity tends to lack character. If I add a little noise or distortion to a sound it seems to add some other layer of interest. A dx7 had an individual sound even though it was digital- it came from the converters. I've just bought VSM and I'm sure the pleasant sound comes from subtle imperfections. Maybe they build that into the Korg MS-20 filter.

I would have to add Synplant. I mean look at it... it's a freaking plant! Makes some interesting sounds too.

Post

ms20
absynth
Aalto

Hemmick reef is 100% right mentioning the processing. it is far more important than what one might think.
It's not what you use, it's how you use it...

Absynth was also the synth that came to mind - seems that one is coming up the most for others too.

Aalto borrows a number of ideas from the Buchla 200/200e synths and so to me sounds more like an emulation of that or one of the myriad new modules coming out from various builders who offer complex oscillators and low pass gates.

Some of the Reaktor based stuff seems to have a certain sound, things like Spark.

One thing I enjoy about older freeware is the wide selection of simpler, yet completely unique instruments- synths that aren't trying to do everything or emulate particular hardware, but have their own specific flavor; examples like Majken's Chimera, Krakli's Cygnus and Xakt, any of the Moppelsynths, HERC's Abakos, etc. There's lots of stuff out there that just doesn't sound like anything else, and for that kind of character to be freely available, without any of the rarity/inflated price issues of older hardware? I likey.
Music can no longer soothe the worried thoughts of monarchs; it can only tell you when it's time to buy margarine or copulate. -xoxos
Discontinue use if rash or irritation develops.

Over-clarity also bothered me when I started trying out soft-synths. Character compressors and effects help a bit to add some character, but I know what you mean.

Heya Synchanter, nice nick 8D
If things are sounding sterile and coldly digital-
tape seems to me to make them more organic/random
It is possible to get an indiscernible noise floor.
Other things it can do is saturate,soften/smudge and DC offset remove
I have been using it recently, mainly to modify offsets,
but for sterility/machinelike I recommend it too

my god- I didn't realise I was capable of this subjective analogue/digital lingo,
don't mean to stir the pot, just some advice on getting away from square forms on track length waves

just one thing, clarity is desirable to many. A wave without aliases in VST is kinda hard to do

Thanks, though I don't understand half of all that lingo, I am impressed!
So far I tried Vintage Warmer 2, Fabfilter Saturn and GT Supercharger to color stuff. (Demos)

I understand its a matter of taste what type of sound people want to go for.
The digital sound will appeal to some, while others want the more analog sound.

Once you start programming your synths they will get your own character.
