If Roland made a D50 vst emulation, would you purchase it?

I bought the rack version, D550 just to satisfy my curiosity. It's got those dated 80's sounds I love,
plus, it's a VA synth in it's own right. Arguably the first, although Roland certainly would never market it that way.
I voted fish, btw.

Not my taste at all. Don't really like the M1 mentioned previously either. I had a U20 which had a number of D50 sounds on it and buying that was a huge mistake.
The DX7 seemed to be hated for years, the D50 somehow managed to escape that fate. I'd still prefer a DX7 any day.

Ha! I got to carry the U20 around while working at one store. It was better in the store than it was in the live mix. But what I really loved about it was its size and portability. It has become my basis of comparison in measuring/weight/and even play-ability for the 61 note keyboard. (But otherwise, I'm very glad I never bought one.)ChamomileShark wrote:Not my taste at all. The first board I sold to this girl I knew (who is now my wife) was a D5.
So I ended up using it often (as a very raw-punk-cheese sound it was great).
I really don't miss any of them though and it kind of makes me chuckle when I see these threads.
I guess many of us know that once you had them, there's no real reason to have them again.
I get everything I ever liked out of the 'D' series with the VI's I have now.
(I voted 'Fish') Because like them, they tend to not be as good as the fresh ones.

Well, Korg did both The Wavestation software is great, and the M1 too (and it got the mentioned resonant filters)Maomoondog wrote: Wavestation - Yes. That form of synthesis was dropped too quickly, so much to offer and very useable now.
D50 - No. PCM samples and a new form of synthesis called LA ? Korg had a better idea with the M1, if only they had cosen to add resonant filters

Even if I had the chance of getting one at $99,00 (which is highly unlikely), a 1:1 emulation in software would still be better, since it would allow me to instantiate as many as my CPU could handle, and the sound quality would be only dependent of the audio interface.DrewDale wrote:I voted fish too.
I would much prefer to own a real D-50 (or even a D-550)

have you used Dexed? the AMS doesn't work yet, which really clamps the performance and modulation possibilities. I think Hexter sounds better.Maomoondog wrote: I would gladly go for a DX7 emu, but Dexed has answered that prayer.
i bought a D50 because there is no emulation for it. and after using it, the D50 has some eccentricities that would make programming a faithful emulation extremely difficult. like capturing the almost unpredictable way the portamento works.

I would probably, but it would have to be 1:1 emulation. By this I mean it should emulate the aliasing, d/a converters and everything in between. I would not settle for less, and probably would be disappointed because they wouldn't go this far in emulating.
circuit modeling and 0-dfb filters are cool

Actually. I've had huge experiences of this over the past year. About 10 years ago sold all my hardware to hi totally computer based. Which was awesome until I then missed the tactile, hands-on thing of real synths. Started buying all sorts of huts including a load of old assets from my past. And yup, do disappointed. Ended up selling them all again! Ah well, try and keep hold of those original memories.
