Hmmm... I have sixteen and thirteen of them have a specific purpose. The other three came with the DAWs, but do get some use also, rarely.

That said, I think the answer to the question of how many compressors can one have is

By my math that means you only need 38 of those...
And that is still a good twice more than I would have any idea what to do with. :hihi:

I'm probably on track there. I'd say half are there because of project compatibility, or the fact they were free. A quarter are alternatives, specialised, or came in bundles. So that leaves about 20.

I bought the last one from my 'to buy' list a few months ago: softube CL1b. Job done

I should probably collect hardware next :dog:

One can have 97 compressors on a Mac and 997 on Windows 7. Make sure you have the latest service patch installed.

God, I remember that thread. Was it here or in the Fruity forum? I laughed so hard. Possibly the best thing ever on the internet.
If every KVR member wrote one review a year we'd have 1340 reviews each day!

I'd say the real question is: are you capable of selecting the 'best' one for any particular job, with that amount of choices. I also honestly doubt that you get to really know each one's specifics to be able to make such a choice.

For myself, I have enough comps to make me feel I have to much already. Didn't count but I guess I currently have around eight in my active VST-setup and I'm looking to get rid of a few still. When you listen to interviews with professional (as in: they earn their living this way) audio engineers, when asked which compressors they use on drums, vocals, etc, they pretty consistently name the same two or three compressors as used on almost anything. They have those very few 'goto' compressors because they've used them for ages and know exactly how to get the wanted/needed result from them right away. Most named are the LA2A and the 1176, and I'm sure you can do stellar mixes if you have only a (good) plugin emulation of those two. I like/want/hope to get to that stage where I have only a few comps, know them inside out and know exactly which one I need where to get the best result.

My wife who has been with me for many years has a saying.

"Don't you already have a compressor?"

Which is now a comedic placeholder between us for anything acquired in excess

If I was honestly trying to choose between 79 compressors, that would be an issue, I agree.

Realistically, the choice is between about 20 regulars, and the source narrows that down to 2, 3 or 4 choices (unless it's drums, then there are more choices). Taste does the rest. My regular ones, beyond the all-rounders, are all emulations of specific gear, and it's fairly common knowledge what each ones excels at.

I could own only 2 compressors, and if they both sounded great on a source, I'd still have the dilemma of choice :hihi:

Nice one.
So are you a 1k or a 2k guy? :D
There are billions of choices that one can make in audio. You can change a mix from meh to wow with a few handful choices of 1 or 2 db here and there. So why not have a gazillion compressors to choose from? We have tons of options with an eq on every channel plus the faders. Different colors on various channels help to get seperation in the mix. And I'm not even talking about synths here... :hihi:

Great answer :-)

About the choice between the two, that more or less comes down on two pretty different style comps, one working great on vocals and acoustics while the other one works better on drums and such... just as an example of course. But I do really like the idea of having a 'goto' compressor for specific sources like vocals, drums, etc. Currently I still have a hard time choosing a vocal comp from the three or four viable options that I have. Trying all that stuff out to find what works best takes loads of time.

Personally -> 4x analog, 4x digital atm. As long as you actually know how to use your comps and in what situation - you can have as many as you like.

P.S. when it comes to delays - 100 might not be enough though...

All of them.
All of them.
All of them!
ALL OF THEM!!!!
