It didn't go auto-pilot has you can quickly create complex repeating patterns. I suggest you check the Axon programming tutorials on AD youtube channel.sys2074 wrote:Axon looks interesting, thanks for the tip! I might give it a try, although I'm not looking for an instrument that completely goes auto-pilot with the rhythm and patterns.valerian_777 wrote:You MUST try out Axon from AudioDamage for ambient percussion. A few instances and there you go..sys2074 wrote:Thanks, these sound quite good but I'm on Mac so a PC-only synth wont cut it for me.

Since pretty much the beginning of the genre i guess. Why wouldn't it contain drums? I don't see any possible definition of the music which would prevent it from having drums or percussive sounds in it.SODDI wrote: But since when did "ambient" music have drums? Oh, since the "genre" got co-opted out of all meaning, as is the trend.

Since when you ask? At least since 1978 and Brian Eno's 'Music For Film' album. But even if you do not recognise the grandfather of ambient, we need to recognise that music genres evolve and acquire new elements, and in the example the OP provided these stem from New Age genres which always used percussion sounds to create an 'ambinet' but rhythmic texture.

I wouldn't count veeeery subdued perc "drums" but you still have white-noise as last choice.

We could now go into a loong discussion about what is Ambient and what is not but for me Ambient is just an umbrella term for, well, ambience-producing music which includes Space Music, Drone music, or 'New Age' as marketing managers would probably call it. And yes, surely it can contain drums/percussions.arkmabat wrote:Drums can be ambient?! The exact opposite of rock drums.

Even Brian Eno uses drums.
I see where you are coming from though. It's just that I'm a drummer and have a hard time believing that a style could render me useless, that's all.

Perhaps it is worthwhile to note, that the word 'drum' does not automatically indicate a 'drum kit', or some loud, rock music style of drumming. There is a whole world of drum instruments:

"Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think" Eno
and so, if this happens through some hybrid styles that fuse other genres with the elements of 'ambient', why would anyone want to censor it? Music styles evolve....

Which we've okayed as a real part of the genre again.himalaya wrote:"Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think" Eno
