Arachno Soundfont is far from perfect, and it has some serious errors as well, like all available soundfonts, but it's more balanced (sounds, volumes, etc.) on average than all the free soundfonts and commercial soundfonts I've checked, which were made by people who don't really have a clue about how a General MIDI sound library should be set up.
I'd really appreciate it if people here recorded the following tracks using NI Bandstand, SONiVOX 250Mb, proVitamin, Ntonyx, or any other commercial GM sound set that I can't demo. Also, I'd love to hear how a Yamaha MU2000, MU1000 or MU500 renders them.
I wouldn't buy any GM sound set if it doesn't render these tracks well enough. Demos on companies' own websites are totally unrepresentative.
End Level track from Descent: MIDI | FLAC
Facing The Spider (track from DOOM): MIDI | FLAC
Sky Deck (track from Sonic Adventure): MIDI | FLAC
track from Parodius: MIDI | FLAC

Hi,
I wanted to buy SONiVOX 250MB, but I can't find it anywhere. Do you know where I can buy it? And if not is it okay for me if I find it on internet to use it for commercial songs?

Hmm, the current SONiVOX website http://www.sonivoxmi.com/ does not list any of their soundfonts...I assumed they had stopped selling them. What is their "test" site for? Is it still possible to purchase their soundfonts? I already have mostly all the SONiVOX soundfonts: 4 MB GM, 24 MB GS, 250 MB GS, Retro Synth GM, and Industrial Dance GM. $99.95 is overpriced for an unbalanced 250 MB GM/GS soundfont in my opinion, though I suppose its instruments could still be useful...
I know that is an old post (over a year old), so I'm not sure if you still care about those sound sets...but anyway, I own the following sound sets: NI Bandstand, the SONiVOX soundfonts, proVitamin (Reason Refill), GeneVoice GM64Pro, SoniqBear GM120Pro, JaZMan GM24 PRO, Papelmedia GM 2007, LUXONIX Purity, plus some other GM sound sets. Some of these sound sets are not sold anymore. I can record any MIDIs with whichever requested sound sets, to demonstrate their sound, if anyone's interested.Shy wrote: I'd really appreciate it if people here recorded the following tracks using NI Bandstand, SONiVOX 250Mb, proVitamin, Ntonyx, or any other commercial GM sound set that I can't demo. Can you record some MIDIs with GeneVoice GM64Pro and SoniqBear GM120Pro? I'm intrested in getting them, but I'm still not sure if it's worth it.I know that is an old post (over a year old), so I'm not sure if you still care about those sound sets...but anyway, I own the following sound sets: NI Bandstand, the SONiVOX soundfonts, proVitamin (Reason Refill), GeneVoice GM64Pro, SoniqBear GM120Pro, JaZMan GM24 PRO, Papelmedia GM 2007, LUXONIX Purity, plus some other GM sound sets. Here are some older videos using the SoniqBear soundfont...
A short example of a few instruments:

E1M1 from the game DOOM:

E1M1 from the game DOOM, using the soundfont's alternate banks and some different drumsets:
http://youtu.be/SznPgRqBJbg
Links to MP3 (256 kbps) recordings of MIDI files... The recordings were made with PistonSoft Direct MIDI to MP3 Converter, using Reverb 0% and volume Level 70%.
SoniqBear GM120Pro:
Descent End Level - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/a1r ... iqBear.mp3
Parodius track - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/1wj ... iqBear.mp3
Sky Deck - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/t4t ... iqBear.mp3
Run Like Smeg - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/kx1 ... iqBear.mp3
GM64Pro:
Descent End Level - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/nvr ... M64Pro.mp3
Facing The Spider - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/rnu ... M64Pro.mp3
Parodius track - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/p1o ... M64Pro.mp3
Sky Deck - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/nhz ... M64Pro.mp3
Run Like Smeg - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/op6 ... M64Pro.mp3
The Square in GM64Pro is monophonic, so it doesn't play correctly in Run Like Smeg. It is possible to edit the soundfont to fix this, with a tool such as Awave Studio.

interesting.
Personally for GM sounds I would like something like the Roland hardware modules.

I think the best gm soundfont is the turtle beach montego soundfont converted by syntheritity on vogons.
