which one free vsti synth is versatile to make electronic/synthpop songs using it in conjunction with a drum machine? i want to narrow down my options and pallet of sounds because having like 30 vsti makes me spend so much time finding "the one preset" which will work. instead i want to learn one single vsti and use it for everything. i want it to cover a variety of sounds and include an arpegiator. which one would you suggest?

Just registered eh?
Get ready for an onslaught of suggestions.
All available here:

But my best suggestions are to start with the AAS Player and Alchemy Player.
Maybe add Tone 2 Firebird (which just got updated - 32 bit only)
And then go through the plethora that may be thrown at you for the asking.

Oatmeal is arguably the best free synth, and it has all those features. It also has a randomize button which is magical. It's a very deep synth with elements of FM and additive synthesis, and it has a great selection of filters.

If you don't mind registering, you could get this: http://beatdrive.de/?t=plugin_details&pid=8&cat= IMO unbeatable in terms of versatility and sound in freeware.

TyrellN6 in my (humble?) opinion stands head and shoulders above the rest of freeware synths. I don't like the new GUI as much but there are some great skins made to replace it

Diva.
(Sorry, couldn't help it. Wanted to be the first to make that off-topic suggestion )
Anyway, what kind of synth pop? Michael Jackson? Pet Shop Boys? Vangelis?
But I really share your approach. I have kicked almost all plugins out myself, focusing on a single synth instead. Sure, it can't do everything, but I know it inside out by now and it is enough for me.
Do you have a fast computer? If not something like Tyrell can be a problem.

He could always use a free arp like WOK's Simparp, it has a shuffle control, which the standard SE arp for instance does not. And you can save your arp's and try them on different patches or synths even.BDeep wrote:A crap, it doesn't have an arp... I overlooked that. Move on

Whoops, me too. How good that my suggestion actually features an arp. But there's always BlueArp, which rocks.BDeep wrote:A crap, it doesn't have an arp... I overlooked that. Move on

I would also recommend DUNE LE (Beat Edition). You can actually get it directly via Beat's Facebook page (no login required) as part of their 'New Electro' bundle:

If you can still buy the digital version of CM #200, and if you can still register it, I'd go with Rapture. Not quite free but well worth it.
Otherwise, Dune LE and Firebird are good choices. The Elektrostudio synths are pretty cool as well.

Why does it have to be free? You could spend years working with only free tools, or spend that same time making better sounding music with a few really good tools. The suggestion to buy Diva is actually a really good one. How about saving up your money and investing in something which will bring you years of satisfaction? No one wants to pay for anything anymore...
