There are so many plugins you can use for saturation. I regularly use Ferox (the old one), Soneq, the 'tube' dial on Rough Draft Audio's EQ22, Voxengo's Tube Amp (real nice for 'crunch' - it's all over this mix/master I just finished - https://soundcloud.com/jpeachmusic/high), Endorphin, Nick Crow's Tubedriver.

ThrillseekerVBL : just try the "LA Sweet-Spot" preset
ThrillseekerLA : with Interstage On and compression range to 0 (if you want only saturation and no compression)
ThrillseekerXTC : with a little Drive and a little Mojo, don't touch the EQ but leave them On
FerricTDS : for tape saturation/compression (but without W&F, noise, etc)
TesslaPRO
Rescue : just put it on your track, put Analog On and you can already hear the difference

All of them free from VOS : http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/

Here is few things that will help you out.
They are all properly Gain Staged before processing at Input.
6 Tracks, all plugins in default Mode except Redline Preamp,
i used the British Modern preset on all instances.

wow the SS vtc sound completely different from the rest of the comparison, its noty even subtle lol

I guess is if you're satified by the result it shouldnt matter what u use

as usual with these comparisons the unprocessed sounds best to me, if not as "loud" as others or as unacceptably boomy as SS VTM+VTC...but Im not fan of EDM and would like to hear some acoustic material,too...

secondly I dont find the comparison fair, because in case of Slate the material been processed twice compared to other processed files?

In the case of VCC yes, it goes thru Tape and Channel but Tape does not do anything to the
Sound, its unnoticeable, all VCC does is just raises the Volume and BASS so in reality they
are all processed the same, except Preamp and ReelBus which are not Channels.

VTM is much more obvious than VCC when i use them. What do you mean it doesn't do anything to the sound? That seems like it would be a pretty worthless plugin....

exactly!!

I dont have VTM, but real tape ALWAYS does something to the sound...which is easily hearable even for completely unexperienced people /and when driven super carefully it at least adds crazy amount of hiss  /

Try VTM with the bias on "high" for anything with sibilance or bright transients, and listen to how they aren't fully represented on the tape. The get smoothed out ( which you might want or might hate).

Post

funny thing is that the worst sibilances Ive heard in my life were on fully analogue records /tape to vinyl/...

maybe thats because VTM still wasnt ready in 70ies..

Post an example! I've heard some pretty bad examples in modern stuff.
Edit: oops. "Fully analog" won't post. :-)

Postby scalawag; All of them are great but get FerricTDS:

Knew I should read the thread b4 posting. Instruments, arrangement and gated snares are all gonna give a good 80s feel to your tracks. But after that, any good tape emu across the master is never gonna hurt. Every track going thru the same channel strip plug can give an analogue desk feel as well

I really like PSP's "vintage warmer"

the purchase gives you 3 versions

one is the full deal with compression, saturation, EQ and tape
The 2.0 version has a new Oversampling Algorithm
and the other is "micro warmer" and its mainly just the tape emu

check out the demo, the plugin has been out for a long time buts its pretty much awesome even for today

Satin and Kramer tape were the only two emulations i heard so far. I preferred satin myself as it seems to live up to it's name. I'm not sure how much like "real tape" it is because I've never used a real studio tape recorder.

Just get a couple of nice old 1:1 audio transformers and wire them up with balanced connectors. DAC - trannies - ADC. Push them as hard as you like for the amount of saturation you need. Gonna sound way good and be about the same price as some of these plugins mentioned...
