I see lots of things on the net about building tension up for drops, risers, sweeps, etc, but what can be done if you want to wind down a bit? You forsee something softer and calmer coming up and want to transition to it more smoothly.

I've got a little trance piano solo I really want to keep, and it is towards my intro, but the track has grown to energenic after fiddling with it for months.

I never had such problem. The more energetic track, the more apparent break feels. Just make sure you got some long reverb tail when instruments stop playing and you should be fine. You can even boost reverb length or mix before break just for this purpose.

You should try filtering things out.
So you could slowly filter out the bass, or main lead / synth.
Or try a white noise or whatever downlifter to bring the track down into the piano breakdown.
